Card Games/Nothing
Nothing is a multiplayer card game with one standard 52-card deck (no jokers).[note 1]
Points
Points are the core of Nothing. How many points a player has can be determined by the cards in their hand. There are two kinds of cards, being Nothing Cards and regular cards.
Nothing Cards are special cards that are worth zero points. These are the four sevens, the one-eyed jacks,[note 2] and the king of hearts.
Regular cards are any cards except those worth nothing. The value of any regular card is equal to the number shown on the face (e.g. a six is six points, an ace is one point, etc.). For face cards, points are according to their hierarchy. (Jacks are worth 11 points, queens 12, and kings 13.)
Objective
The objective of Nothing is to have the lowest number of points at the end of the game. The player who has done so is the winner.
Setup
Cards are shuffled and laid face-down in a central draw pile. Next, each player is dealt seven cards.
Gameplay
When the first player begins their turn, they must draw a card from the draw pile and add it to their hand, hidden to every other player. The player then removes a card from their hand and adds it to a previously nonexistent discard pile, facing up. Play passes to the left.
Subsequent turns are nearly identical to that of the first one, but with one key difference. Instead of being forced to draw from the draw pile, a player may draw the topmost card of the discard pile instead.
In the event that a player draws a card and declares their turn over without putting a card in the discard, they are not allowed to make up for it, and they will have that extra number of cards for the remainder of the game.
The game ends when no cards remain in the draw pile. Then, all players must reveal their hands. The player whose hand has the least number of points is declared the winner.
Notes
- ↑ More decks may be included if the number of players must exceed 6, for doing such with one deck leaves an inadequate number of cards in the draw pile for play to reach all players.
- ↑ These are the jack of spades and the jack of hearts, each showing only one eye on their illustration, being viewed from the side.
