Falkbeer Countergambit
With 2...d5 Black challenges the center, intending to develop quickly instead of taking White's pawn and attempting to hold on it. White normally chooses to take the pawn on d5.
- 3.exd5 is the usual White response, leading to a scramble for control of the d5, e4, and e5 squares. Black usually either accepts the pawn a move late with 3...exf4 or counterattacks with 3...c6 or 3...e4.
- 3.Nf3 develops the knight and controls the h4 square to deal with the threat of Qh4+. If Black plays dxe4, attacking the knight, White can simply play Nxe5.
- 3.fxe5?? is a blunder as ...Qh4+! 4. g3 Qxe4+ 5. Qe2 Qxh1 is most embarrassing.
