Potatoes are perfect for camping—they don't take up space in the cooler, and cooked in foil they are easy to prepare.
Ingredients
- 1 large baking potato
- Cooking oil
- Salt
- Butter or sour cream (optional)
Procedure
Cleaning and Preparation
You must prepare your potatoes before using a method below, or the potatoes may cook incorrectly or explode itself.
- Scrub potato on all sides to clean the surface.
- Pierce skin of potato with a fork or small-tipped object to create holes for inside pressure.
Camping variation
- Clean and prepare potatoes as above.
- Cook over medium-hot coals for 45 minutes or until soft.
- Serve with salt and butter or sour cream.
Microwave variation
- Clean and prepare potatoes as above, but wrap them in plastic wrap, not foil. Be sure to poke the potato and the plastic wrap with a fork to make sure it is cooked evenly and does not explode in the microwave due to pressure.
- Place a piece of paper towel in the microwave, and microwave potatoes on high for 8 minutes. Potatoes will be extremely hot when finished.
- Cut potato into four and serve with toppings of your choice.
Oven variation
- Preheat oven to 190°C (375°F).
- Clean and prepare potatoes as above.
- Place the potatoes in the oven.
- Cook for 1 hour.
- Remove when cooked. Puncture potato and separate skin from flesh.
Notes, tips, and variations
- Other possible toppings include spicy beans, avocado, salsa, bacon bits, mushrooms grated cheese... or whatever is left in the fridge!
Warnings
- When cooking is initially completed, handle the hot potato with care.
