Ghouls of the Miskatonic/Chapter 10
Plot
At the Arkham Advertiser after closing hours, Gabriel Stone is searching through archived newspapers for clues related to the recent disappearances. He finds fragmented information about unusual phenomena in Arkham, but one account particularly stands out: a deranged murderer from 1905, Dr. Allan Halsey, who killed fourteen people and devoured three corpses. A manhunt revealed Halsey had transformed into a malformed ape-like creature and though captured, he escaped in 1921, his subsequent fate unknown. Gabriel then attempts to find information related to Professor Oliver Grayson. Finding details about Oliver as an anthropologist who traveled the world studying devolved tribes, he decides to follow up on this lead.
In the mysterious cave, Amanda and Rita find themselves safe, albeit chained, alongside the monstrous ghoul. A heavy door opens above, flooding the cave with light and revealing numerous barred alcoves, each containing a ghoul that retreats from the light. Two hooded figures descend into the cave, stating their interest is only in Amanda and her dreams about the sunken city and the Great Old One Cthulhu. They are joined by another hooded man in crimson robes, who tells Amanda that if she does not reveal everything about her dreams, he will feed Rita to the ghoul.
At Miskatonic University, Oliver has lost more sleep due to troubled nights and unsettling phone calls from Arkham Asylum regarding Henry Cartwright's worsening condition. He has also just received news of Amanda and Rita's disappearance, leaving him to wonder what unspeakable horror he has been dragged into. Desperate for help, he runs into Alexander, telling him about the horrifying contents of the book he provided. Alexander states that they must fight against the Great Old Ones and their followers. Oliver is reluctant, citing the mental destruction of Morley Dean and Henry Cartwright and argues that the two of them stand no chance. Alexander then reveals the truth of his past with Henry: during the Great War, Alexander's marine company discovered a hidden library in northern France. He and Henry read through the books, which contained horrifying truths of the universe. Against Henry's advice, other marines joined them in reading, leading them to madness, self-inflicted deaths, and catatonic states. Henry himself was slowly consumed by the same madness. Oliver then agrees to become Alexander's ally.
