Ghouls of the Miskatonic/Chapter 5
Plot
Rex Murphy and Minnie Klein are waiting at the crime scene hoping the killer will return, who they suspect is the mysterious man who previously observed them. The man does reappear to inspect the scene, and Minnie takes a photograph of him, but in doing so she reveals their hidden position. At gunpoint, Rex and Minnie are forced to face him, but they learn that he is not the murderer but the victim's father, also trying to find whoever killed his daughter.
Professor Oliver Grayson’s career began at Brown University in Rhode Island, where he collaborated with Professor Morley Dean. Together, they undertook an expedition to Alaska to study coastal communities and tribes. But the tribes unsettling rituals and dark histories took a severe toll on Morley, leading to his hospitalization and eventual resignation. The unfortunate affair made Oliver feel unwelcome at Brown, so he moved to the Miskatonic University in Arkham where he found a happier academic environment.
Oliver returns to the faculty lounge at Miskatonic to review his notes from his earlier meeting with Amanda. He is soon approached by two colleagues, Professor Theodore Hutchins and Nathaniel Eaton, who mock him about the mystery of the Yopasi tribe's disappearance. However, Alexander Templeton, another colleague and a close friend of Oliver's, intervenes by insulting Hutchins and Eaton, prompting them to leave.
Alexander had served as a captain in a Marine company during the Great War, where Henry Cartwright also served. Henry held a strong dislike for Alexander due to a past disagreement that led to the deaths of numerous men. When Alexander applied for a position at Miskatonic University, Henry protested his hiring. Alexander's appointment caused Henry to snap, initiating the arson attacks that led to his arrest and commitment to Arkham Asylum.
Alexander and Oliver discuss Amanda's dreams. Alexander expresses strong skepticism, warning Oliver about Amanda potentially fabricating her experiences. He shares his cynical views on the "self-indulgence" of Arkham’s youth, suggesting that Amanda might merely be using her "dreams" to pursue Oliver for attention.
