Jet Propulsion/Turbines
A turbine produces mechanical work from the pressure or kinetic enrgy of a moving fluid. They differ from reciprocating motors in that the fluid flows through continuously.
Turbines like compressors can be axial or radial.
Applications
Water Turbines
The earliest water turbines were water wheels.
These extract mechanical work from water pressure.
Wind Turbines
Commonly known as windmill extract work from the wind.
Steam Turbines
These extract mechanical work from steam.
Used in most gas turbines and steam turbines
Radial Turbines
Used in turbochargers and small gas turbines.
