UNO/UNO Attack!

< UNO

UNO Attack!, released in 1999, is an UNO game played using an electronic card launcher to add a degree of unprdictability to the game.

The Deck

The UNO Attack! deck has 112 cards, the same as standard UNO. However, there are several new action cards, replacing some of the cards from standard UNO:

  • The Draw Two cards are replaced with the new Hit Two cards.
  • The 0 and Wild Shuffle Hands cards, as well as four of the eight Reverse cards, are replaced with eight Discard All cards, two for each colour.
  • The Wild Draw Four cards are replaced with the new Wild Attack-Attack cards.

The Card Launcher

The card launcher.

The main feature of UNO Attack! is the card launcher, a special machine which sits in the centre of the table and effectively replaces the normal mechanic of drawing cards from a draw pile. Throughout the history of UNO Attack! the card launcher has seen several iterations - the current design is shown at right.

The machine contains an internal gear mechanism that allows it to launch cards into the air. On the top of the machine is a door that can be opened to access the interior mechanism, and a black clip to hold the cards in place.

Near the bottom is a yellow launcher button that a player must press if they cannot play a card on their turn. But the launcher doesn't shoot out cards all of the time. Sometime it doesn't shoot out any cards, sometimes it only shoots out a few cards and someone quite a lot.

The card launcher requires three C batteries to operate, which are installed in a compartment on the bottom face of the machine, which also houses the on/off switch. More recent versions of the card launcher can make lights and sounds to add a sense of suspense.

Basic Gameplay

To set up:

  • A dealer is selected, and the dealer shuffles the deck and deal seven cards to each player.
  • The top card of the deck is used to start a discard pile. The pre-2018 rules are used for starting with an action card.
  • The dealer opens the door on the top of the card launcher, pulls up the clip and loads the deck in facedown (using the clip to secure it) before closing the door.
  • The dealer turns the card launcher on and places it in the centre of the table, facing the first player. During gameplay the card launcher should always face the player whose turn it is to play.

Basic gameplay is mostly the same as standard UNO, but there are several key differences:

  • If a player cannot play a card on their turn or does not want to, then instead of drawing from a draw pile they press the launcher button. The launcher will make a noise, and there is a chance that cards may shoot out. If this happens the player must take all of the cards that shot out and add them to their hand.
  • If a player plays their penultimate cards, but forgets to call "UNO" and is caught, they must press the launcher button twice.

Action Cards

Hit Two

This cards replaces the Draw Two from standard UNO. When it is played the next player must press the launcher button twice, adding any cards that shoot out to their hand, then lose their turn.

If turned up at the beginning of play the first player must press the launcher button twice.

Reverse

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Skip

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Discard All

This card allows a player to discard all of the cards in their hand that match the colour of the Discard All in one turn, with the Discard All placed on top.

If turned up at the beginning of play the first player must play a card that matches the colour of the Discard All, or play another Discard All. If neither can be done, they press the launcher button.

Wild

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Wild Customisable

Acts the same as in standard UNO.

Wild Hit Four

This card replaces the Wild Draw Four from standard UNO. When it is played the next player must press the launcher button four times, then lose their turn. This card is also a Wild, so the player that played it is allowed to declare the colour that resumes play.

If turned up at the beginning of play the first player must press the launcher button four times and collect any cards, then the second player plays.

Unlike a Wild Draw Four, a Wild Hit Four cannot be challenged.

Wild Attack-Attack

When this card is played the player declares a colour to resume play with and chooses another player to attack. That player must press the launcher button twice, then play proceeds to the player after them.

If turned up at the beginning of play the first player is allowed to launch an attack, but unlike normal play then proceeds to the second player.

If a player goes out by playing this card, their attacks must be resolved before the game ends.

Scoring

Unlike standard UNO, reacing a score of 500 points is the default way to win the game in UNO Attack!. Cards are scored as follows:

  • Number cards are worth their face value.
  • Reverse, Skip and Hit Two cards are worth twenty points.
  • Discard All cards are worth thirty points.
  • Wild Hit Four cards are worth forty points.
  • All other Wild cards are worth fifty points.
