The White House

Washington D.C. is the capital city of the United States. It is not a state nor part of any state but a federal district. It sits on the Potomac River between the states of Maryland and Virginia. It was founded on July 16, 1790. The capital city was designed by architect Pierre L'Enfant, who also later designed the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France. In its center is the National Mall, the Smithsonian Institution museum complex, and many government buildings, including the US Capitol and the White House. The White House, finished in 1800, is where the president, the country's leader, resides.
