The 2025–26 season is the 129th season in the history of Viborg FF, and their fifth consecutive year in the Danish Superliga, the top level of football within Denmark. During the season, the team will also compete within the Danish Cup, the country's official knockout tournament.

Head coach Jakob Poulsen departed the club on 20 June 2025 after agreeing to become the head coach of fellow Superliga club AGF. Nickolai Lund, who joined Viborg as an assistant in May, was promoted to interim head coach on 16 July. Viborg announced on 24 July they had promoted Lund to permanent head coach, as he signed a three-year deal with the club.

Pre-season and friendlies

Viborg announced the schedule for their first preseason games on 25 June, with matches planned at home against Randers and AaB, and one away match against Danish Superliga newcomers Fredericia.[1][2] Viborg opened their preseason friendlies with a match against Randers at Energi Viborg Arena on 28 June 2025, with Nickolai Lund taking charge of the team[3] following Jakob Poulsen's departure as head coach the week prior.[4] A large roster of regular first-team members, as well as six under-19 reserve players, were available for the match.[5] Randers ultimately left with a 2–0 victory over Viborg with goals from Oliver Olsen and Stephen Odey, while 22 different players made appearances for Viborg.[3][6] The following Saturday, 5 June, Viborg took on Superliga newcomer Fredericia in a match that was split into two, 60 minute halves.[7] At Monjasa Park, Fredericia winger Gustav Marcussen scored in the 9th minute to give the home side a 1–0 lead. Viborg would come back with two goals before the halftime break, with Anosike Ementa and Charly Nouck scoring in the 20th and 23rd minute respectively. The second half, with a new field of players, Viborg went on to score five goals to leave with a 7–1 victory.[8] The club's final match of the preseason took place 12 July against recently-relegated AaB.[9] After an evenly-matched first half, Viborg's Charly Nouck scored in the 41st minute to give the team a 1–0 lead heading into the break.[10] Yonis Njoh, who signed with Viborg on a permanent transfer during the summer, extended the lead when he scored in the 65th minute. With a 2–0 final score, Viborg won their last friendly match ahead of the Superliga season.[11]

Superliga

Viborg in action against Sønderjyske (in black)

One week after the end of the 2024–25 Danish Superliga season on 6 June, the schedule for the first seven match days was released by the Superliga. Viborg was scheduled to kick off the season on Friday, 18 July 2025, against defending champions Copenhagen at Energi Viborg Arena.[12] The opening league fixture was the debut for Nickolai Lund, having been named as the interim head coach two days before the game.[13] Lund joined the club in May after leaving Copenhagen six months prior.[14][15]

Opening the 2025–26 Danish Superliga season, Viborg captain Jeppe Grønning scored the first goal, converting a penalty in the 24th minute. Copenhagen equalised before halftime when Elias Achouri, who left Viborg in 2023, to make the score at 1–1 in the 37th minute. Shortly after the halftime break, Mohamed Elyounoussi gave the away side a narrow lead. Mads Søndergaard became Viborg's second scorer to bring the score back level at 2–2 in the 73rd minute, converting a corner kick from Serginho.[16] The score was short-lived when Magnus Mattsson scored a penalty, having been taken down inside the box by Viborg's Jean-Manuel Mbom. The teams continued to exchange chances in the final minutes of the match; however, Copenhagen left Energi Viborg Arena as winners in a 3–2 victory.[17] Nickolai Lund led Viborg as head coach in a match against OB, having been named as permanent head coach on 24 July.[18][19] His first match ended in defeat at Nature Energy Park when OB took a 3–0 lead in the second half, after former Viborg defender Nicolas Bürgy scored twice against his old club.[20] Viborg nearly scored in the 60th minute before the goal was ruled offside by VAR.[21] The game ended 3–1 despite a late goal from Charly Nouck, who joined Viborg from OB in 2024.[22]

The first match of August gave Viborg their first win of the season, a 2–0 result against Brøndby with goals from Yonis Njoh and Anosike Ementa in each half respectively.[23] The club's first home game of August was played on Friday, 8 August, and gave them their second consecutive victory when Mads Søndergaard scored in the 33rd minute against Sønderjyske. Despite a late opportunity from Kristall Máni Ingason, Viborg held on to win and move themselves up to 4th place in the league.[24][25] Silkeborg visited Energi Viborg Arena in the following week and got off to a fast start against Viborg, with Alexander Busch scoring in just the second minute of the match and Tonni Adamsen adding a second in the 11th minute. Viborg fought back with Mads Søndergaard scoring his third goal of the season, and Jakob Vester scoring to make it 2–2. Tim Freriks momentarily gave Viborg a 3–2 lead right before the halftime break; however, it was ruled out following a VAR review to keep the scores level. The second half again saw Freriks score following a corner kick before VAR ruled out a goal for the second time.[26] The game ended with Silkeborg leaving with a 3–2 victory, following a handball penalty kick, which was converted by Jens Martin Gammelby.[27]

Danish Cup

As Viborg finished the previous Superliga season in 8th place, they will enter into the cup competition in the second round.[28] The club finished the previous season's cup competition in the semi-final, being eliminated by eventual champion Copenhagen 2–0 on aggregate.[29] On 12 August 2025, Viborg’s second round opposition was determined when AC Horsens secured a 2–1 victory over Næsby in the first round of the competition. The match is scheduled to take place in early September, and will be the second consecutive season in which Viborg will meet the 1st Divison club in the second round.[30]
