Draft:International League for Human Rights (Berlin)
The International League for Human Rights (German: Internationale Liga für Menschenrechte or ILMR), founded on 13 February 1959 in West Berlin, is a non‑profit association dedicated to promoting human rights and peace. It is based in the House of Democracy and Human Rights in Berlin and functions independently of governments, political parties, or religious bodies.[1]
Historical legacy
ILMR traces its heritage to the early 20th‑century German pacifist movement. Its predecessor, the Bund Neues Vaterland, was established in 1914, later renamed the Deutsche Liga für Menschenrechte in 1922. That organization was banned in 1933 under Nazi Germany. After World War II, activists in exile and in Germany revitalized the tradition, leading to the formation of the ILMR in West Berlin in 1959, carrying forward the spirit of Nobel laureate Carl von Ossietzky.[1]
Global affiliations and recognition
ILMR holds membership in the European Association for the Defense of Human Rights (AEDH) and the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH). It also maintains consultative status with international bodies such as the United Nations, the Council of Europe, and UNESCO.
Since 1962, ILMR has awarded the Carl von Ossietzky Medal to individuals and organizations demonstrating outstanding civil courage and commitment to human rights and peace. The award has been given annually (or biennially since 2011) to recipients worldwide.
