This is a list of 'national capitals, ordered according to total area'. Capitals of dependent territories and disputed territories are marked in italics. The area of the capital city only includes the area occupied by the city and not the wider urban/metropolitan district or administrative division created solely for the city; except Ankara, which is a metropolitan municipality, so its entire metro area is within the capital city of Turkey, according to the Turkish administrative system.[1]

The United Nations and most countries do not accept the Jerusalem Law (see Kellerman 1993, p. 140) and maintain their embassies in other cities such as Tel Aviv, Ramat Gan, and Herzliya (see the CIA Factbook and Map of Israel) The Palestinian Authority sees East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state and the city's final status awaits future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (see "Negotiating Jerusalem", University of Maryland Archived 2006-05-14 at the Wayback Machine). See Positions on Jerusalem for more information.

- ^ Switzerland has no de jure capital. Bern is referred to as "federal city" (German: Bundesstadt, French: ville fédérale, Italian: città federale). Swiss law does not designate a capital as such, but the federal parliament and government are located in Bern, while the federal courts are located in other cities.

- ^ The official and de jure capital is Plymouth. However, due to the eruption of Soufrière Hills, a volcano, Plymouth was destroyed and the de facto capital and main administration is in Brades.
