Lydia Prince

Lydia Prince (8 March 1890 - 5 October 1975) was a Danish missionary, and the first wife of Bible teacher Derek Prince.

Early years

Born Lydia Christensen in North Jutland, Denmark, she was the youngest of four sisters in an affluent family. Her father was a successful builder who played an important role in developing their hometown of Bronderslev.

She became a state school teacher, and was a pioneer in the field of home economics. By 1925, she was director of home economics in a school in Korsor.

Her Christian faith led her to give up her job and go to Jerusalem in 1928 after becoming convinced that this was what God wanted her to do, even though she did not know what she was going to do when she got there.

She learned Arabic, founded an orphanage in Ramallah, north of Jerusalem, and adopted eight girls.

She ministered the gospel to Arab women, and British soldiers who visited Jerusalem during World War II.[1][2]

Marriage and later years

She married Derek Prince (who was stationed in Jerusalam with the British army) in 1946. He adopted her daughters, and the couple later adopted another girl.

The Princes lived in various countries and continued travelling internationally after settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Lydia Prince worked alongside her husband whilst taking care of their family.

She also returned to her roots, teaching home economics to African women students while the Princes were in Africa.[2]

Death

Prince died and was buried in Fort Lauderdale in 1975, aged 85, after a stroke and a two-year illness.[2][3]
