Mehmet Mustafa Şahin (born 10 September 1997) is a Turkish Greco-Roman wrestler competing in the 72 kg weight class. He won a bronze medal at the 2025 European Wrestling Championships.[1]
Career
Şahin started wrestling in his hometown Kahramanmaraş and established himself as one of Turkey’s leading wrestlers in the 72 kg Greco-Roman category. He represents İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi S.K. and also competed in the German Bundesliga for ASV Mainz 1888. Known for his dynamic style and explosive throws, he has become a fan favorite and earned the nickname "Ayıgüçlü" (bear-strong).
In May 2025, Şahin competed at the Ulaanbaatar Open, part of the UWW Ranking Series in Mongolia. He secured the **silver medal** after winning bouts against **Yryskeldi Khamzaev (TJK)**, **Zandanbat Batsaikhan (MGL)**, and **Ankit Gulia (IND)**, before losing to Iranian world champion **Seyed Danial Sohrabi** in the final.[2]
At the 2025 European Wrestling Championships in Bratislava, Şahin earned the bronze medal in the 72 kg division. After an early-round defeat to Ibrahim Ghanem (FRA), he advanced through the repechage, defeating **Mihai Petic (ROU)** 5–2 and **Kristupas Šleiva (LTU)** 9–2 to secure a place on the podium.[3]
Earlier in 2025, Şahin competed at the Muhamet Malo Tournament in Tirana, Albania, where he claimed the **silver medal** in the 72 kg category. He also placed 14th at another UWW Ranking Series tournament, gaining valuable match experience against top-ranked opponents.[1]
Domestically, he has won multiple Turkish national titles in the 72 kg Greco-Roman category, including the **gold medal at the 2025 Turkish Championships**, and is regarded as one of Turkey’s leading wrestlers in his weight class.[4]
Education
Alongside his wrestling career, Şahin is pursuing a master's degree in Movement and Sports Sciences at the University of Hamburg. He is recognized as a Spitzensportler (elite athlete) by the university, which provides him with academic accommodations due to his international wrestling commitments.
