Naganagouda Kandkur (c. 1945 – 2024) was an Indian politician from Karnataka who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Gurmitkal Assembly constituency in Yadgir district from 2018 to 2023. He was a member of the Janata Dal (Secular) and represented the constituency multiple times during his political career.[1]
Early life and background
Naganagouda Kandkur was born around 1945 in Kandkur village, Gurmitkal taluk, Yadgir district, Karnataka.[2] He belonged to a politically active family and later became a prominent figure in local politics.
Political career
Kandkur had a long political career spanning several decades, primarily associated with the Janata Dal (Secular). He served as the MLA from Gurmitkal Assembly constituency on multiple occasions. During his political career, he also held important administrative positions, including his appointment as Chairman of the Karnataka Slum Development Board[3] and a position in the Karnataka Slum Clearance Board.[4] During the COVID-19 pandemic, he tested positive for the virus.[5]

- Constituency: Gurmitkal (Yadgir district) - Party: Janata Dal (Secular) - Result: Elected with 79,627 votes, winning margin of 24,480 votes[6][7][8][9] - Main opponents: Saibanna Borbanda (BJP), Baburao Chinchansur (Congress)[10] - Victory ended Congress's 51-year hold on the constituency[11][12][13][14][15] - Term: 16 May 2018 to 2023 - Profession: Social Work and Agriculture[16] - Assembly Attendance: 93.4% (above state average of 82.5%)[17]

Political relationships
Kandkur had notable political relationships and rivalries during his career. He had a long-standing political rivalry with veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, who had previously represented Gurmitkal for eight consecutive terms. However, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Kandkur set aside their differences to support Kharge in accordance with the coalition agreement between JD(S) and Congress.
Personal life
Naganagouda Kandkur was married and had children. His son Sharanagouda Kandkur followed in his footsteps and was elected as MLA from Gurmitkal constituency in the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election, representing the Janata Dal (Secular).
Death
Naganagouda Kandkur passed away in 2024.[20] His death was widely mourned by political leaders and constituents across party lines.
Legacy
Kandkur is remembered as a dedicated public servant who worked for the development of the Gurmitkal constituency. His political legacy continues through his son Sharanagouda Kandkur, who currently represents the same constituency.
