Sasha (Russian: Саша) is a Russian drama film directed by Vladimir Bek in 2022.[1][2][3]
It premiered on December 1, 2022. The film was shot with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.[4]
The film received three awards at the Lucca Film Festival (film critics, audience sympathies and student jury),[5] as well as the National Film Center of Moldova award at the Transylvania IFF.[6]
Plot
Sasha, a fifteen-year-old schoolgirl, lives with her grandfather after the death of her mother Anna. She has long lost all contact with her father. Suddenly, her grandfather becomes seriously ill with cancer. Sasha is forced to move in with her father. Her loneliness is brightened by a random group of teenagers, who have become the only close people to the girl in a new hostile environment. The only problem is that the new friends take the short-haired tomboy for a boy. However, Sasha herself soon accepts these rules of the game.[7]

Production
Filming of the film began in August 2021.[8]
Vladimir Bek noted that he encountered certain difficulties when creating "Sasha" and searching for producer support, largely because "Russia is a homophobic country".[9]
Critical response
Ksenia Rozhdestvenskaya (Kommersant) notes that "adulthood is routine, violence and powerlessness, but it is not necessary to fit into this system, it can be hacked". For example, "you can pretend to be someone else, as the heroine of Vladimir Bek's "Sasha" does, she cuts her hair and responds when she is considered a boy".[10]
