Weightlifting at the 1979 Pan American Games
Weightlifting at the 1979 Pan American Games was a men's competition held in San Juan, Puerto Rico, from July 1 to July 15, 1979, as part of the VIII Pan American Games. The programme featured ten weight classes ranging from flyweight (52 kg) to super heavyweight (+110 kg). Competitors vied for medals based on the combined total of the snatch and clean & jerk lifts, the standard format since the removal of the clean and press in 1972. Cuba and the United States were among the dominant nations, with athletes such as Daniel Núñez of Cuba capturing the bantamweight title. The event contributed to the overall medal standings of the Games, which included 34 countries and 250 events across 24 sports.
