Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital (YDMH), also known as Yusuf Dantsoho General Hospital or Asibitin Dutse, is a public secondary healthcare facility located in Tudun Wada, Kaduna South Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Nigeria. It provides comprehensive primary and secondary health services and serves as a key referral center in the region.[1]
History
The hospital was established in 1989 to meet the growing healthcare needs of Kaduna's southern districts. Named in honor of Yusuf Dantsoho, a prominent figure in Northern Nigeria's political and social development, the hospital has evolved into a vital institution for public health delivery.[2]
Facilities
YDMH is a 155-bed facility equipped with:
- Operating theatre
- Emergency department
- Blood bank
- Pathology laboratory
- Pharmacy
- Neonatal care unit
- Oxygen plant (commissioned in 2024)[3]
The hospital maintains reliable electricity, filtered running water, and modern sanitation infrastructure.[1]
Services
Yusuf Dantsoho Memorial Hospital offers a wide range of medical services, including:
- Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Pediatric Surgery
- General Surgery
- Anesthesiology
- Dermatology
- Ophthalmology and Optometry
- Family Medicine
- Emergency Medicine
- Neonatal Intensive Care[1]
Newborn Care Unit
In March 2024, the hospital's Level 2 newborn care unit was upgraded through a partnership between UNICEF, IHS Towers, and the Canadian government. The unit now serves as a referral center for primary health Kaduna State. It has significantly reduced neonatal mortality rates, which previously stood at 63 deaths per 1,000 live births—among the highest in Nigeria.[3]
The unit is managed by Matron Jummai Hamisu, whose team provides care for conditions such as birth asphyxia, neonatal sepsis, jaundice, and respiratory distress. The installation of an on-site oxygen plant has been described as a “game-changer” by hospital leadership.[3]
Community Engagement
In July 2025, the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) conducted a grassroots health outreach at YDMH. The initiative included donations of mosquito nets, disinfectants, and a full sanitation of the hospital premises. The effort was praised by hospital staff and highlighted the importance of community support in public health.[4]
Academic and Research Contributions
A 2016 postgraduate study conducted at Ahmadu Bello University examined patient flow and resource utilization in the hospital's outpatient department. The research highlighted operational challenges and proposed solutions for improving service delivery.[5]
Leadership
The hospital is overseen by the Kaduna State Ministry of Health. As of 2024, the Chief Medical Director is Dr. Nagaji Safiya Bello.[3]
