Rabanus Maurus

Rabanus Maurus Magnentius (c. 780 – 4 February 856), also known as Hrabanus or Rhabanus, was a Frankish Benedictine monk, theologian, poet, encyclopedist and military writer who became archbishop of Mainz in East Francia. He composed a number of hymns, the most famous being the Veni Creator Spiritus.

• Veni Creator Spiritus,
  Mentes tuorum visita,
  Imple superna gratia,
  Quae tu creasti pectora.
  
  Qui Paraclitus diceris,
  Donum Dei altissimi
  Fons vivus, ignis, caritas,
  Et spiritalis unctio.
  • Come, O Creator Spirit blest!
    And in our souls take up Thy rest;
    Come, with Thy grace and heav'nly aid,
    To fill the hearts which Thou hast made.
    
    Great Paraclete! to Thee we cry:
    O highest gift of God most high!
