• Sphenantha Schrad. (and the species Sphenantha scabra Schrad.) is often regarded as synonymous to Cucurbita, but according to McVaugh & Anderson (1983) is not a representative of the Cucurbitaceae. The position of Sphenantha scandens Steud. is also unclear, however, see Govaerts et al.(2021) & Hassler (2021).
