⧼Description⧽

Neltneriidae is an extinct family of trilobites belonging to the order Ptychopariida, that lived during the Lower Cambrian period. This family is known primarily from fossil records found in North Africa, especially the Anti-Atlas region of Morocco.

The family is characterized by:

  • moderately convex cephalon,
  • a well-defined glabella with lateral furrows,
  • thorax with 8–12 segments, and
  • a pygidium that is usually small and undifferentiated.

They are believed to be benthic (bottom-dwelling), slow-moving marine arthropods that played a role in early Cambrian benthic ecosystems.

Etymology

The family name Neltneriidae is derived from the type genus Neltneria, which was named in honor of the geologist Louis Neltner, who made significant contributions to North African geological exploration.
