Ääpel

See also: aapel and ååpel

Central Franconian

Alternative forms

  • Äärpel (parts of Moselle Franconian and western Ripuarian)
  • Äädappel, Äärdappel (full form, now less common)

Etymology

Contraction of the full form above, itself from Ääd (earth) +‎ Appel (apple). Compare regional German Erdapfel (notably uncommon in Rhenish Standard German), Dutch aardappel, French pomme de terre.

The contraction probably started out from the plural Äädäppel as a kind of haplology. The contemporary plural in -e is secondary.

  • IPA(key): /ˈɛːpəl/
