Etymology

From the similarity of the stigma (Ϛ), a Byzantine ligature of the common Greek consonant cluster σ-τ using sigma's lunate form ϲ, with the medieval variant of the numerical form of digamma (), employed in Greek numerals for the value six, its place in the epichoric Milesian Greek alphabet (where it was more often written Ϝ).
