Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ (ánthrax, “charcoal”), from the accusative singular "τόν (tón) ἄνθρακα (ánthraka); compare dialectal άθρακας (áthrakas, “disease, pestilence”).
For the chemical sense, semantic loan from French carbone. For the disease, semantic loan from English anthrax, from Latin anthrax from Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ (ánthrax) in sense "carbuncle".
