A learned creation ἀββαεῖον (abbaeîon), from ἀββ(ᾶς) (abb(âs)) + neuter suffix -εῖον (-eîon) > modern -είο (-eío), with simplification of double consonant and accents. A calque of French abbaye (“abbey”), from Latin abbatīa.
