Etymology

From proper noun Αμφιτρύωνας (Amfitrýonas). Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek Ἀμφιτρύων (Amphitrúōn) from the accusative singular "τόν Ἀμφιτρύωνα" from ἀμφί (amphí) & τρύω (trúō, wear out). Semantic loan from French amphitryon from the comedy by Molière Amphitryon,[1] as in the verses:[2][3][4]
