Etymology

Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓νᾰφῠ́ομαι (ănăphŭ́omai, I am grown again) of active ᾰ̓νᾰφῠ́ω. The figurative sense, a semantic loan from French surgir.[1][2] Morphologically, from ανα- (again) +‎ φύομαι (fýomai, grow).
