Inherited from Byzantine Greek ἀφιόνι(ον) (aphióni(on)), a medieval αντιδάνειο (antidáneio, “repatriated loanword”), from Ottoman Turkish آفیون (afyon, “opium”), ultimately a reborrowing from Ancient Greek ὄπιον (ópion).
