γάζα
See also: Γάζα
Ancient Greek
Etymology
From Old Median *ganǰam (“treasure”) spread by the Achaemenid administration.
The Liddell-Scott-Jones dictionary marks the first α long in this word and all its derivatives, but if the second α is short (as the declension class leads us to expect), then the accentuation proves the first must also be short, as it would take a circumflex (*γᾶζα) if it were long.
