γνάμπτω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Unknown. Although it is commonly assumed that it was influenced by κάμπτω (kámptō, to bend, curve), this verb does not have the κ- (k-), nor can the -ν- (-n-) have been taken from there. An Indo-European etymology seems excluded, because γναμπ- (gnamp-) cannot have an Indo-European preform. Even though an alternation γν/κ (gn/k) is not typical for Pre-Greek either, Beekes does not reject this hypothesis.
