Etymology

As an animate noun, a feminisation of γραμματικός (grammatikós, teacher of the rudiments, grammarian) and as an inanimate noun, an ellipsis of γραμματικὴ τέχνη (grammatikḕ tékhnē, grammatical art, grammar).
