Substantivised form of the expression in neuter plural διόδια χρήματα (diódia chrímata) < an adjective διόδιος (diódios) (see Koine Greek διόδιον n (diódion, “passage”)) by ellipsis of χρήματα n pl (chrímata, “money”). From Ancient Greek δίοδος (díodos, “passage”), from διά (diá) in the form of δι- (di-) + ὁδός (hodós) (modern οδός (odós)).
