From Byzantine Greek εἶντα (eînta) or εἴντα (eínta), from τεῖντα (teînta) / τείντα (teínta), equivalent to a contraction of the phrase τί εἶναι τά (tí eînai tá) > τί εἶν’ τά (tí eîn’ tá), equivalent to τι είναι τα (ti eínai ta, “what are the these”).^[1]
