θαμβός • (thambós) m (feminine θᾰμβή, neuter θᾰμβόν); first/second declension

1. (hapax legomenon) astonished
   • 1115 – 1195, Eustathius Thessalonicensis, Commentarii ad Homeri Iliadem et Odysseam 906.53:

     καὶ θάμβος μὲν ἡ ἔκπληξις, θαμβός δὲ κατὰ ὀξεῖαν τάσιν ὁ ἐκπλαγείς

     kaì thámbos mèn hē ékplēxis, thambós dè katà oxeîan tásin ho ekplageís

     Similarly, "θάμβος" means 'astonishment', while "θαμβός" (in accordance with its oxytone accent) means 'astonished'.

• Only occurs in a list of examples invoked by Eustathius in his commentary on Iliad 12.310, to explain the retracted accent of the name Γλαῦκος (Glaûkos) as compared to the adjective γλαυκός (glaukós, “blue-gray”).
