κερκίων
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Α suffix -ίων (-íōn) is found in other animal names, like ἀκανθίων (akanthíōn, “hedgehog”) and πορφυρίων (porphuríōn, “swamphen”). Frisk derives it from κέρκος (kérkos, “tail”), because this bird wags its tail.
