κοινά
Ancient Greek
Etymology 1
Uncertain. Hesychius gives the definition as χόρτος (khórtos). The stem κοιν- (koin-) matches perfectly with the expected Greek descendant of Proto-Indo-European *ḱóyno-, with cognates including Old Church Slavonic сѣно (sěno), and Lithuanian šienas. This would work with the definition "grass, hay" of χόρτος (khórtos). However, some have argued that it may simply be an inflected form of κοινός (koinós, “common”), interpreting it as simply a communal piece of land, lining up with the "barn, pasture" sense of χόρτος (khórtos).
