κολοιός

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Onomatopoeic origin cannot be further substantiated; neither does the word belong to καλέω (kaléō, to call, summon). It would be highly unsatisfactory to separate κολῳός (kolōiós, brawling) from this word, but an explanation of the notation with -ῳ- has not been found. Confront also κολουᾶν (kolouân, to make noise) and κολοίφρυξ (koloíphrux, Tanagrian cock). These variants may prove a Pre-Greek origin.
