κοσύμβη

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • κοσσῠ́μβη (kossŭ́mbē)

Etymology

Lewy compares Akkadian 𒆪𒍦𒁍 (ku-zip-pu /kuzippu, guzippu/, cloak), Arabic كُرْسُف (kursuf, cotton). Pre-Greek origin is likely, given the prenasalization and similar words like κόσυμβος (kósumbos, hairnet), κότθυβος (kótthubos, piece of military equipment) and κοσυβάτας (kosubátas, sacrificer). This does not exclude that the word is found in Semitic too, since it may be an old Kulturwort.
