From Byzantine Greek κουκούτσιν (koukoútsin), borrowed from Italian cucuzza (pumpkin), with semantic shift "pumpkin" > "seeds of the pumpkin" > "seeds of other fruit (stone, pit, pip, kernel)".[1]
