Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)koris (cutting, gnawing), from *(s)ker- (cut). Cognate to Russian корь (korʹ, moth).

Alternatively related to ἀκαρί (akarí, mite) via Pre-Greek. Compare also κᾱρῑ́ς (kārī́s, shrimp).
