λουλούδι
Greek
Etymology
Various theories have been proposed:
- Three possibilities from Babiniotis[1]:
- 1. Inherited from Byzantine Greek [Term?], from Albanian lule or lulediell (“sunflower”).
- 2. From λειρίδιον (leirídion), λειλίδιον (leilídion), from Koine Greek λειρίον (leiríon, “lily”), from Ancient Greek λείριον (leírion, “id”).
- 3. From Ancient Greek *λίλιον (*lílion) (from Latin lilium (“lily”)) + -ούδι (-oúdi, diminutive).
- From Kriaras[2]:
Regardless, the first part of the word is from the same ultimate source as English lily.
