Etymology

Onomatopoeic word; compare Latin nonnus (monk; old person), Proto-Celtic *nana (grandmother), Sanskrit नना (nanā, mother, mama), Russian ня́ня (njánja, nurse). Within Greek, we found νόννος (nónnos, father), νάννας (nánnas, uncle) and νίννη (nínnē, grandmother).
