νωδός

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Possibly reflects Proto-Indo-European *n̥h₃dós (not biting), from *h₃ed- (bite).

Alternatively, a back-formation from *νώδων (*nṓdōn) from νω- (nō-, not) +‎ ὀδών (odṓn, tooth) by analogy to pairs like στράβων (strábōn, the squint-eyed person) and στραβός (strabós, squint-eyed) or ψώλων (psṓlōn, the circumcised one) and ψωλός (psōlós, with the prepuce drawn back).
