Uncertain. Most commonly explained as related to πῑ́πτω (pī́ptō, “to fall”) or πόντος (póntos, “sea”)/Proto-Indo-European *pónteh₁s (“path, bridge”). Alternatively, from Proto-Indo-European *kweth₂- (“to bubble, foam”).
