Etymology
From Ottoman Turkish پول (pul), possibly from Persian پول (pul), itself possibly from Ancient Greek ὀβολός (obolós). The semantic sense of a stamp or game piece in backgammon or checkers is an Ottoman innovation possibly deriving from the originally borrowed meaning of a (small) coin. Doublet of πούλια (poúlia).
