Etymology

Probably originally identical with πύον (púon, “pus”), from Proto-Indo-European *puH- (“rotten, foul”), but with gender and accent after ὀρός (orós, “whey”) and τυρός (turós, “cheese”), which belong to the same semantic field. Both the substance and its properties (like smell and fermentation) may have caused the transference of meaning from "pus" to "milk".
