Etymology

Often connected with σκῆνος (skênos, “corpse”) which, if correct, could point to a Pre-Greek origin. The suffix -αρ can also be seen in κύδαρ (kúdar), ἴκταρ (íktar), and σῦφαρ (sûphar).
