Uncertain. Possibly reflecting a Proto-Indo-European *sḱeyr-o- (“shine, reflex”), whence also Albanian hir (“heavenly grace”), Proto-Germanic *skīriz (“pure, lucid”),^[1] and Proto-Slavic *ščirъ (“sincere, frank”).
