Etymology

Perhaps a blend of καρφώνω (karfóno, to nail, stab) +‎ σκαλώνω (skalóno, to hitch, catch), with the σ- (s-) of σκαλώνω (skalóno) switched to the beginning of καρφώνω (karfóno).[1]
