Etymology

Apparently from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kd-n-eh₂ (to split); Beekes cites Avestan 𐬯𐬗𐬌𐬥𐬛𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (scindaiieiti, breaks, destroys) as a particularly close cognate.[1]
