From Proto-Hellenic *steřřos, from Proto-Indo-European *ster-yos, from the root *ster- (barren). Exact cognate with Old Armenian ստերջ (sterǰ, barren, infertile). Further compare English steer, Albanian shterrë, Latin sterilis, Sanskrit स्तरी (starī).
